Air Quality Flag Program

The Air Quality Flag Program was developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and uses brightly colored flags, based on the EPA Air Quality Index (AQI), to notify people and their communities about outdoor air quality conditions. Organizations and schools can raise a flag each day that corresponds to their local air quality forecast. Click here to view all participating schools and organizations in Utah.

The Air Quality Flag Program is meant to accompany, not replace, the Recess Guidance. The Air Quality Flag Program is designed to increase awareness of air quality, not make decisions about recess.

The Utah Asthma Program has a limited number of flag sets available to organizations and schools for free. Please contact asthma@utah.gov to inquire about a free air quality flag kit.

Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools Action Kitflag program

IAQ Tools for Schools Action Kit shows schools how to carry out a practical plan to improve indoor air quality at little- or no-cost using simple activities and in-house staff. The Kit provides:

  • Best practices
  • Industry guidelines
  • Sample policies
  • A sample IAQ management plan

Problem Solving Tool

The EPA has taken the IAQ Tools for Schools Problem Solving Wheel and made it available on the web as the Problem Solving Tool. Click on a health symptom to review a list of possible causes of these complaints, then use the resources and checklists available in the IAQ Tools for Schools Action Kit to identify and respond to IAQ issues.
